Guide-lines for Authors

Europa Publications publishes a unique series of regularly-revised reference books which cover every aspect of international affairs, politics and economics world-wide.
Europa's highly-acclaimed reference works have a reputation for their accuracy and reliability, and are used extensively by libraries, government departments, embassies, international organizations, academic institutions and businesses world-wide.

Europa Publications is the publisher of The Europa World Year Book, The World of Learning, The International Who's Who and other internationally renowned reference works. The Development Projects Department, whose current projects include the Political and Economic Dictionaries of the world series, the Territories series and projects in the area of Civil Society and the Third Sector, would be interested in considering proposals for new books which would build on Europa's reputation as a publisher of up-to-date and unbiased reference books.

To put forward a project for consideration by the Development Projects team, please contact the Development Projects Editors, Europa Publications, Taylor & Francis Group Ltd, 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE, or e-mail edit.europa@tandf.co.uk. Please include the following information, which should not total more than three or four A4 pages:

  • Proposed title and, where applicable, sub-title.
  • A general paragraph on the subject area of the book.
  • A more detailed synopsis of the project, including, where available or applicable, chapter and/or section titles and an explanatory paragraph on the contents of each.
  • An indication as to the approximate length of book - as a guide-line, most new projects would be around 100,000 words long.
  • Your proposed schedule - by when the completed project would be sent to Europa.
  • Target market(s) for the book (e.g. academic, student, business, library).
  • A list of any competing publications you know of, along with reasons you think your book will be better or will target a different market.
  • A brief curriculum vitae of all authors and contributors.

Potential authors are encouraged to append any additional information that might be of use to Europa or to a reviewer, e.g. sample chapters or sections, or even a draft manuscript.

Once we have received a proposal, an Editor will evaluate the project, assessing whether it would make a valuable addition to Europa's lists, and whether there is a market for such a publication on a national and international scale. Proposals may be further evaluated by academic experts, who give independent advice on the content, quality and potential market for such a book, based on the initial proposal and on any sample material that has been sent. Advice is also sought from Europa's Marketing Department, and the project is discussed at one or more New Projects Meetings, where each proposal is discussed in detail by members of the Editorial, Marketing and Sales teams, and either approved, rejected, or provisionally approved, subject to certain revisions.

Once a project has been approved, a draft contract will be issued. Once terms have been agreed, contracts are signed with an agreed date for the delivery of the finished manuscript, which normally would be submitted on disk along with an accompanying printed version. An Editor would then take over the handling of the next stage of the project, and the book would be edited, typeset and proof-read, in liaison with you, before the printing and production process. Europa would then publish, market and sell the book internationally.
